CALL TO ACTION: |
|
At an environmental review on September 9, 2024, South Shore Audubon submitted spoken and written comments for the record that the nature preserves bordering the Nassau Hub will be endangered by the proposed large-scale development of the Sands Casino. For your review, a copy of South Shore Audubon's written comments can be found here. A link to Nassau County’s document archive with the Draft Scope for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Sands Casino can be found here: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/5712/Las-Vegas-Sands-Nassau-Coliseum-Site-Doc SSAS written comments urge careful consideration be made of the Sands project's potential environmental impacts on Hempstead Plains Preserve and Francis T. Purcell Preserve. Both nature preserves border the proposed Nassau Hub. URGENT CALL TO ACTION: Please review and submit your comments on the environmental impact of the Nassau Hub. Public comments will be accepted until September 19, 2024 at 5:00 P.M. Submit your written comments to the Clerk of the Legislature, Michael C. Pulitzer, either addressed to him at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501 or sent to him by e-mail addressed to mpulitzer@nassaucountyny.gov. Suggested 500-character comment (please edit as you may so desire): “If the Sands Casino proposal is developed without critical environmental considerations and concessions, it can have a huge and irreparable impact on neighboring nature preserves that are Nassau County’s last bastion of the ecologically and historically important Hempstead Plains grassland ecosystem which includes NYS endangered and threatened L.I. grassland obligate species. It could finish off the last remnants of the Hempstead Plains ecosystem forever. Please do not let this happen. I urge you to preserve Nassau County’s natural heritage and to leave a lasting environmental legacy for future generations of Long Islanders. Thank you.” Does it feel like we’ve done this before? In January 2024, an environmental review was held which was nullified as a consequence of a later court case, and all comments sent in January no longer count. So, it’s important to be resolute and please send your comments again now, so our voices will count this time! Thank you for your care and concern for Nassau County’s wildlife and the habitats they need.
